King Street Market
-
This aquatint provides insight into the entrepreneurship of Black Delawareans and the integrated experience of open-air markets in Wilmington.
-
This unframed color aquatint of the King Street farmer's market in Wilmington was created by Gertrude Howland Balch (1909-1964). The print depicts a street scene with stalls and a backdrop of buildings. The street is filled with merchants and buyers, depicted in a range of skin tones, milling about in front of the stalls. The work is signed in pencil along lower edge: "King Street Market / 1/10 / Gertrude H. Balch."
Balch was a printmaker and watercolor artist. Her works primarily captured scenes of everyday life in African American neighborhoods in Wilmington, Delaware.
