Rationale

Description
The "Miss Nagano" doll was a gift exchanged in the Friendship Doll project, which was initiated in 1927 as a way to encourage children to promote world peace. American children sent 12,739 dolls over to Japan in time for the annual Hinamatsuri (doll) Festival and the Japanese returned the gesture by sending fifty-eight friendship dolls back to America. Each doll represented a specific Japanese prefecture and came with a range of furniture and accessories. The dolls, including this one, toured the country and were then installed in various cultural institutions across the USA.

The doll has a composition head, body, lower arms, and legs. The neck is jointed and movable, as are the legs at the ankles, knees, and hips. The upper arms and legs are fabric-covered. The head has straight, black, bobbed hair with a fringe and glass eyes. The doll wears a red silk floral pattern kimono and obi, white cotton undergarments with an embroidered edge, and white silk Tabi socks. Associated with the doll is a set of accessories including, but not limited to, shoes, furniture, cookware, and an explanatory booklet.
