Study for a Mural in the Home of Dr. and Mrs. Goens
-
Provides a perspective on the home life of prominent Black Delawareans.
-
Best known for his stylish illustrations and Art Deco murals, Aaron Douglas was at the heart of the Harlem Renaissance, a period of innovation and invention in African American culture in the 1920's.
Douglas painted two murals for the Goens family in Delaware. This is the study for the second mural, which surrounded the fireplace in their Hockessin home. Dr. and Mrs. Grace Goens were pillars of Wilmington's African American community and relatives of the prominent artist.
